Octavio Getino (born August 6, 1935, in León, Spain – died October 1, 2012, in Buenos Aires, Argentina) was an Argentine film director and writer. He is best known for starting, along with Fernando Solanas, a group called Grupo Cine Liberación and a new way of making movies called Third Cinema.
Octavio Getino was born in Spain. He moved to Argentina in the 1950s.
In 1964, he won an important award called the Premio Casa de las Américas for his book of short stories titled Chulleca. Getino also wrote many essays about movies and society.
From 1989 to 1990, Getino was in charge of the Instituto Nacional de Cinematografía (INCAA). This is a national organization that helps make movies in Argentina.
He passed away from cancer at the age of 77 on October 1, 2012.
