Odell Haggins' Coaching Journey
Starting at Florida State
Odell Haggins has been a part of the Florida State Seminoles coaching team since 1994. Most of his time has been spent coaching the defensive tackle position. Since 2014, he has also been the associate head coach. This means he is a very important assistant coach.
Playing Days and Early Coaching
Before coaching, Haggins was a talented defensive lineman for the Seminoles. He played for Florida State from 1985 to 1989 under famous coach Bobby Bowden. After his college career, he played professional football for three years. He was chosen by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1990 NFL draft. He also played for the Buffalo Bills.
In 1994, Haggins returned to Florida State. He started as a coach for tight ends and the offensive line under Coach Bowden. He continued to coach when Jimbo Fisher became head coach in 2010. In 2014, he was promoted to associate head coach.
Stepping Up as Interim Head Coach
Haggins has twice taken over as the temporary head coach, known as an "interim" coach.
First Time as Interim Coach (2017)
In 2017, when Coach Fisher left, Haggins became the interim head coach. He led the team to two wins without any losses. These wins helped the Seminoles qualify for a bowl game. They won the 2017 Independence Bowl against Southern Miss with a score of 42–13.
Second Time as Interim Coach (2019)
Haggins was kept on staff by the next head coach, Willie Taggart. When Coach Taggart was fired in 2019, Haggins again stepped in as interim coach. He led the team for the final three regular season games. The team won two of those three games. This helped them reach another bowl game.
Longest-Serving Assistant Coach
In December 2019, Mike Norvell became the new head coach for Florida State. He quickly hired Haggins to join his staff. As of 2025, Haggins has been an assistant coach at Florida State for over 30 years. This makes him the longest-serving assistant coach in college football! He has worked under four different head coaches at Florida State.
In 2018, Odell Haggins was honored for his achievements. He was selected for the Florida State University Athletics Hall of Fame.
Coaching Record Summary
As an interim head coach for Florida State, Odell Haggins has a strong record. He led the team to 4 wins and only 2 losses overall. In bowl games, his record is 1 win and 1 loss.
