The Odontophrynus cordobae is a special type of frog found only in northern Argentina. It belongs to the Odontophrynidae family. In Spanish, people sometimes call this frog escuercito. You can find it in the Córdoba and Santiago del Estero Provinces.

Scientists officially identified this frog as a separate species in 2002. Before that, it was thought to be the same as another frog, Odontophrynus americanus.

About the Córdoba Escuercito Frog

The Odontophrynus cordobae is a unique frog. It is an endemic species. This means it lives naturally in only one specific area. For this frog, that area is northern Argentina.

Where the Frog Lives

This frog likes to live in mountain areas. Its home includes grasslands and forests. You can often find these frogs hiding under rocks. They prefer places that are a bit damp and cool.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

The Odontophrynus cordobae frogs reproduce in mountain streams. These streams must have water all year round. The baby frogs, called tadpoles, need a long time to grow. They take more than a year to change into adult frogs. This change is called metamorphosis.

What Threatens This Frog

The Odontophrynus cordobae is quite common where it lives. It can even handle some changes to its home. However, its habitat is still at risk. People cutting down trees for wood can harm their homes. Also, land being cleared for raising cattle can destroy their living spaces. These actions can threaten the frog's future.
