The Odontophrynus americanus is a type of frog. People also call it the common lesser escuercito or the American ground frog. It belongs to the Odontophrynidae family of frogs.
You can find this frog in several South American countries. It lives in central and northern Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and southern Paraguay. This frog is special because it is tetraploid. This means it has extra sets of chromosomes in its cells. Some similar frogs with fewer chromosomes are now known as a different species, Odontophrynus cordobae.
About the American Ground Frog
The Odontophrynus americanus is quite common where it lives. It prefers open areas like grasslands and savannas. This frog is also a fossorial species. This means it likes to dig and live underground.
Habitat and Life Cycle
Even though these frogs usually live underground, they come out during the breeding season. You can find them near shallow, temporary ponds or flooded areas. Male frogs make calls at night. They call from the water's edge or even while in the water.
This frog species can handle changes in its environment. Scientists have not found any major threats to its survival.
