Odvar Nordli (3 November 1927 – 9 January 2018) was an important Norwegian politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. From 1976 to 1981, he served as the 28th Prime Minister of Norway. This was during a time known as the Cold War.

Before becoming Prime Minister, Nordli was the Minister of Local Government from 1971 to 1972. After his time as Prime Minister, he continued to serve his country. He was the Vice President of the Storting (Norway's parliament) from 1981 to 1985. He was also a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1985 to 1996.

Early Life and Education

Odvar Nordli was born in Tangen, Hedmark, Norway. His father, Eugen Nordli, worked on the railroad. His mother was Marie Jørgensen.

After World War II, Nordli served in the military. He was part of the Norwegian forces in Germany. He later became a certified accountant. He worked in this field until 1961. He also served as a deputy mayor in his local area, Stange, from 1951 to 1963.

Starting His Political Journey

Nordli began his career in national politics in 1961. He was elected to the Norwegian Parliament from Hedmark. He was re-elected five times, serving for many years.

In 1971, he joined the government as a minister. He became the Minister of Local Government. This was in the first government led by Trygve Bratteli.

In 1975, the Labour Party needed a new leader. Both Nordli and Reiulf Steen wanted the job. They reached an agreement: Steen became the party leader, and Nordli was chosen to be the next Prime Minister. However, they did not work together very well.

Becoming Prime Minister of Norway

Odvar Nordli became Prime Minister in 1976. He led a government called the cabinet Nordli. During his time as Prime Minister, he faced several big challenges. These included important decisions about NATO. He also dealt with a national disagreement about building a dam on the Alta-Kautokeino river. This was known as the Alta controversy.

His government made improvements to social support. In 1978, they made sickness benefits better. Workers could get 100% of their wages from the first day they were sick, for up to 52 weeks. Before this, workers did not get paid for the first three days of sickness.

The government also worked on Norway's economy. They borrowed money from other countries. The idea was that future oil income would help pay it back. However, wages in Norway grew faster than in other countries. This made it harder for Norwegian businesses to compete. In 1978, the government put a temporary ban on increasing wages and prices. This law lasted through 1979.

In foreign relations, Norway set up a 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone in 1977. This meant Norway had special rights to fish and resources in its waters. This caused some issues with Russia, which also had a similar zone. In 1978, Norway and Russia agreed on a temporary "Grey Zone Agreement." This agreement helped manage fishing rights between the two countries. It was renewed many times until a permanent agreement was made in 2010.

The 1977 Norwegian parliamentary election happened less than a year after Nordli became Prime Minister. It was a good election for Nordli and the Labour Party. They stayed in power. However, the 1979 Norwegian local elections were not as successful. This was partly because of the economy. It made Nordli's position weaker.

About two years into his term, Nordli started having health problems. In 1981, his doctor suggested he take time off. This news became public before he had decided. Soon after, he was replaced by Gro Harlem Brundtland. She then formed a new Labour government.

After Being Prime Minister

After leaving the Prime Minister's office in 1981, Odvar Nordli was elected Vice President of the Storting. He held this important role until 1985.

His final major public job was as County Governor of Hedmark. He held this position from 1981 until he retired in 1993. He also served as a member of the Norwegian Nobel Committee from 1985 to 1993. This committee decides who wins the Nobel Peace Prize.

After retiring, Nordli wrote several books. These included stories about his life, politics, daily events, and nature.

Personal Life

Odvar Nordli married Marit Haraseth in 1953. They met through the Labour Youth organization in Hedmark. They had two daughters and lived in Stange.

Odvar Nordli passed away on 9 January 2018, in Oslo. He was 90 years old. His funeral was held on 19 January 2018.
