Ofelia Rey Castelao, born in 1956, is a historian, writer, and university professor from Galicia, a region in Spain. She is especially interested in the history of women. She studies how women moved from one place to another (migration) and how Galician women became part of the world of reading and writing. In 2022, she won a very important award called the National History Prize of Spain.

Early Life and Education

Ofelia Rey Castelao was born in A Estrada, a town in Pontevedra, Spain, in 1956.

Studying History at University

She studied Geography and History at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). In 1978, she earned her history degree. Her final project for the degree was so good that it received a special "Extraordinary Prize" from the university.

That same year, the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science gave her the National Award for the Best Scholars. This award recognized her as one of the top students in the country.

Doctoral Studies and Further Awards

In 1984, Ofelia Rey Castelao completed her doctoral thesis. A thesis is a very long research paper that you write to get a PhD. Her thesis was about "The vote of Santiago in modern Spain." She presented it at the University of Santiago de Compostela and it was given the highest possible grade, "outstanding cum laude." She also received another "Extraordinary Prize" for her doctoral work. In 1985, she won the Prize for Doctoral Theses from the Provincial Council of Pontevedra.

Ofelia Rey Castelao has had a long and successful career in history and education.

Starting Her Academic Journey

From 1979 to 1981, she was a research fellow for the Ministry of Education. This means she received money to do historical research. In 1978, she started working at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She began as a scholarship holder and then became an assistant professor of Modern History.

Becoming a Full Professor

In 1986, she became a professor. Then, in 2002, she became a full professor, which is the highest teaching rank at a university. This means she is a leading expert in her field.

International Work and Leadership

Ofelia Rey Castelao has also been involved in international historical groups.

  • In 1990, she became a member of the International Commission of Historical Demography. This group studies how populations have changed over time.
  • From 1990 to 2005, she was the director of a history journal called Obradoiro de Historia Moderna.
  • Since 1992, she has led many research projects both in Spain and with other countries.
  • In 2005, she was chosen to be a member of the Bureau of the International Commission of Historical Demography in Sydney, Australia.
