Off the Grid (food organization) facts for kids
Off the Grid is a cool company that brings together lots of food trucks and pop-up restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, USA. They create fun outdoor markets, special events, and even serve food at workplaces. They really helped make food trucks popular in San Francisco starting in 2010.
What is Off the Grid?
Off the Grid is most famous for its public markets. These are like big outdoor food parties where many different food vendors gather. They set up their trucks and stands in an open space on certain days. Hundreds of people come to enjoy delicious food every week!
How Off the Grid Started
The idea for Off the Grid came from Matt Cohen. He was teaching in Japan and saw street vendors selling food from their vehicles. He thought it would be a great idea to bring something similar to the Bay Area.
The very first Off the Grid event happened on June 25, 2010. It was held at Fort Mason Center in San Francisco. This first event had live music, and vendors offered tasty Latin and Asian foods.
Growth and Variety
In 2010, Off the Grid opened three markets. By 2011, they had nine more, and now there are 15 markets running every week! More than 200 different food vendors are part of Off the Grid.
Each market offers a wide variety of foods. The vendors change often, so every event feels new and exciting. You can find many international foods, like American, South American, Taiwanese, Indian, Japanese, Mexican, and Mediterranean dishes. Besides public markets, Off the Grid also helps with catering for big events and provides food for companies.
