The Official Museums of Amsterdam (OAM) is a group that helps museums in Amsterdam work together. This group started meeting in the 1980s. It officially became an organization in 1994. It includes both private and public museums. All of them are part of the Dutch Museum Association.
The OAM has a leader (called a chair) and a co-leader (vice-chair). Tonko Grever is the current chair. Judikje Kiers, who leads the Amsterdam Museum, is the vice-chair.

What is the OAM?
The name 'Official Museums of Amsterdam' can be a bit confusing. It's actually the English translation of a Dutch name that means 'meeting' or 'discussion group.' This group is not a formal government body. Instead, it's a club where museums, especially those that get help from the government, meet. They work together to plan their marketing. This helps them get more support from the city for promoting Amsterdam's culture.
How Do Museums of Amsterdam Work Together?
The OAM has two main parts that help its member museums. These parts focus on business and marketing.
SAM: Working on Business Interests
The foundation called Samenwerkende Amsterdamse Musea (SAM) looks after the business side of the OAM. It helps the museums with their shared financial and operational needs. Bjorn Stenvers was the first director of SAM from 2012 to 2017. In 2015, he also started the Amsterdam Museum Academy. This academy provides training for people who work at museums.
MOAM: Handling Marketing and Communication
The Marketing Overleg der Amsterdamse Musea (MOAM) focuses on marketing for the OAM. All the heads of marketing and communication from the forty-four partner museums are part of MOAM. They act as experts and advisors for the museums. The popular Museum Night (Dutch: Museumnacht, N8) was started by the MOAM. It is now an independent event.
