Where is Ogíjares?
Ogíjares is found in the middle of a very rich and flat area of land. This area gets plenty of water from the Monachil and Dílar rivers, which helps the land stay fertile. This means it's great for farming!
A Look at Ogíjares' Past
How Ogíjares Started
Ogíjares began as two small farming villages built by Arab people a long, long time ago. But even before that, people lived here! Scientists have found old tools and burial sites from the Visigoths and even from the Neolithic period. The Neolithic period was a time when people first started farming and living in settled communities. This shows that people have been living in this area for thousands of years.
The Name's Journey
The name "Ogíjares" has an interesting story. It comes from a Latin phrase, "Hortum Sacrum," which means "Sacred Garden." When Arabic was spoken in the area, this phrase changed to Ortexica, and then later to Oxijar. After the Christian armies took over Granada, the two villages became known as High Ogíjar and Low Ogíjar. Eventually, these two villages joined together to form the single town we know today as Ogíjares.
Growing with Granada
Just like many other towns nearby, Ogíjares has grown a lot and is now like a suburb of the bigger city of Granada. This means many people who live in Ogíjares might work or go to school in Granada, enjoying the benefits of both a smaller town and a larger city.
