The Ohikaiti River is a cool river found in the West Coast Region of New Zealand's South Island. It flows north, which means it runs alongside the bigger Ohikanui River. The Ohikanui River is only about two kilometres away to the west.
The Ohikaiti River eventually flows into the Buller River. This happens at a place called the Buller Gorge. This spot is about 15 kilometres southwest of a town called Westport.
What's in a Name?
Have you ever wondered what a river's name means? The name Ōhikaiti has a special meaning. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage explains it. They say the name means "place of small incantations." An incantation is like a special chant or a magical saying. So, it's a place where small, important words might have been spoken long ago!
