Discover Ohio Village: A Step Back in Time
Ohio Village first opened its doors on July 27, 1974. It was built on 15 acres of land next to the Ohio History Center. The village was originally designed to show what life was like during the American Civil War. Today, Ohio Village focuses on life in the 1890s.
Exploring the Village Buildings
All the buildings in the village are careful copies of real ones from the past. They include a welcome center, a schoolhouse, and a town hall. You can also see a newspaper office called The Telegraphic Advertiser. There's a general store, a Mason Lodge, and a place called Muffin Meadow.
Other buildings include the American House Hotel and Tavern, and the Schmidt House. There is also a church and a pavilion. You can find the H&P Women's Study Club and the Ohio Bank. There's a clothing store, a photographer's studio, and a pharmacy.
The village also has a blacksmith shop and a barn. You can visit the Taylor House and the Barrymore Funeral Parlor. For fun, there's Spinner & Co Toy Shop and a barber shop. You might even see Barrington Bicycles and Murphy's Lodging House. The Burton House is also part of the village.
Visiting Ohio Village
Ohio Village is open to visitors from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. This schedule started in 2012. When you visit, you enter through the Ohio History Center museum. Your ticket to the museum also lets you explore the village.
Special Events and Celebrations
Ohio Village hosts several popular events each year. One favorite is All Hallow's Eve. This event celebrates Halloween in the style of the 1860s. It has been held every October since 1985.
During All Hallow's Eve, you can find fortunetelling. People in costumes explain old beliefs and superstitions. There's also a parade for the dead. This parade goes through the town center. It is meant to make roaming spirits happy. The night ends with a play based on Washington Irving's Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
Another special event is Dickens of a Christmas. This happens every December. You can hear live carolers singing holiday songs. There are also horse-drawn carriage rides. A Victorian Santa Claus visits the village. Characters from Charles Dickens' stories, like Scrooge and Marley, also appear.
Vintage Baseball at Ohio Village
Ohio Village is home to two historic baseball teams. They are the Ohio Village Muffins and the Lady Diamonds. Both teams play baseball using rules from the 19th century. These rules are very similar to those used by the New York Knickerbockers in 1845.
Every year over Labor Day weekend, the village hosts the Ohio Cup Vintage Base Ball Festival. Teams from all over the country come to compete. They all play by the old rules of baseball. It's a fun way to see how the game was played long ago.
History and Future Plans
Ohio Village was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. It was listed along with the Ohio History Center. The village closed after the 2024 Ohio State Fair. It is currently undergoing a two-year renovation.
