Oil City is a tiny community in Carter County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's about 22 miles northwest of a bigger town called Ardmore. This small place started way back in 1896.

The Story of Oil City

How Oil City Got Its Name

Oil City wasn't always called Oil City! It was first known as Wheeler. The name of its post office officially changed to Oil City on October 15, 1919.

You might think a place called Oil City would be all about oil. But this community was actually home to many cotton farms. It even had a factory that made bricks! The name "Oil City" came about because crude oil would sometimes bubble up to the surface of the ground there.

A Stop on the Wagon Trail

Long ago, the area around Oil City was an important stop. It was on a wagon trail that travelers used to get to Ardmore. This means it was a place where people could rest or get supplies during their journeys.

Life in Oil City
