Mining History of Ojos Negros
Ojos Negros was once a busy mining town. Most people worked in the mines nearby. When the mining stopped, it caused big problems for the town. Many people lost their jobs.
Population Changes Over Time
Because the mines closed, the number of people living in Ojos Negros changed a lot. In the 20th century, about 3,000 people lived there. By 2010, this number had dropped to just 560.
The Barrio Minero Community
From 1900 to 1987, a company called Sierra Menera ran the mines. During this time, most of the miners and their families lived in a special area called Barrio Minero. This neighborhood was built very close to the mines. Today, only about 40 people still live in Barrio Minero.
The Ojos Negros Greenway
Ojos Negros is also famous for being the starting point of the Ojos Negros Greenway. A greenway is a path for walking and cycling. This particular greenway follows the old route of the railway line that was used to transport minerals from the mines. It stretches all the way to the town of Puerto de Sagunto in the Valencian Community.
