A Look Back: Okawville's History

Okawville has an interesting past! It was first called "Okaw." This name came from the Kaskaskia River, which flows nearby. The word "Okaw" comes from an old French phrase meaning "to the Kaskaskias," referring to the Native American Kaskaskia tribe.

The village's post office was named Okaw starting in 1836. Later, in 1872, the name was officially changed to Okawville.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Okawville became famous as a spa town. The first Okawville Springs Hotel, a place for relaxation and healing, opened in 1867.
