Okiharu Yasuoka (保岡 興治, Yasuoka Okiharu, 11 May 1939 – 19 April 2019) was an important Japanese politician. He was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This is one of Japan's major political parties. He served in the House of Representatives, which is part of Japan's national legislature called the Diet.

Who Was Okiharu Yasuoka?
Okiharu Yasuoka was born on May 11, 1939, in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan. He grew up in Kagoshima Prefecture. After finishing high school, he went to Chuo University. He studied law and became a licensed attorney.
A Long Political Career
Yasuoka began his political journey in 1972. He was first elected to the House of Representatives as an independent politician. Later, he joined the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). This party is a big part of Japanese politics.
Serving as Justice Minister
Okiharu Yasuoka held a very important job twice: Minister of Justice. This role is like being the head of the country's legal system. He first served as Justice Minister from 2000 to 2001. He took on this role again in 2008 under Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. He was known for working very hard in his political roles.
He also led the LDP's group that studied Japan's Constitution. The Constitution is the main set of laws for a country.
Beyond Politics
Outside of his busy political life, Yasuoka enjoyed staying active. He loved to jog and swim. He even swam across Kinko Bay in Kagoshima Prefecture many times. This bay is about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) wide!
Later Years and Legacy
In October 2017, Okiharu Yasuoka decided to retire from politics. He had been diagnosed with cancer. He passed away from cancer on April 19, 2019, in a Tokyo hospital. He was 79 years old. After his retirement, his son ran for his old seat in the House of Representatives. However, his son did not win the election. The seat went to Hiroshi Kawauchi.
