The Oklahoma Statehood Stamps are special postage stamps from the United States Postal Service. They were first released on June 14, 1957, and again on January 11, 2007. These stamps celebrate big anniversaries for the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma became the 46th state in the United States on November 16, 1907. Statehood means a territory officially becomes a part of the country.
The First Stamp: 1957 Issue
On June 14, 1957, the United States Post Office Department released a three-cent stamp. This stamp marked the 50th anniversary of Oklahoma joining the United States. The stamp was a deep blue color, called ultramarine. It showed a cool design: an arrow going through an atomic symbol. This design represented Oklahoma's journey from its past to a modern future.
The Centenary Stamp: 2007 Issue
For Oklahoma's 100th anniversary, a new stamp was created. This stamp shows a beautiful Oklahoma sunrise. You can see a river flowing through a valley with high plains. A famous artist named Mike Larsen designed this stamp. He is of Chickasaw ancestry.
This stamp also honors the famous 1943 Broadway musical Oklahoma!. The musical was created by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The stamp includes a line from the musical's most famous song: "Oh, what a beautiful mornin'…" This song is also Oklahoma's official state song!
This stamp is part of a series. The United States Postal Service (USPS) has also released stamps for other states. These include Alaska, Oregon, and Hawaii. These stamps celebrate when each of these states joined the Union.
