About Okuda San Miguel's Life
Okuda, whose real name is Oscar San Miguel Erice, was born in Santander, Spain. He started creating graffiti art around 1997. You could see his early works along train tracks and on old, empty factories in his hometown.
After studying Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid, he began making art in his studio. This led to his art being shown in big cities like New York, Berlin, London, and Paris. Around 2009, he also started creating sculptures. By 2011, his sculptures began to feature the colorful, often triangular patterns that he is now famous for. His early art often showed birds, stars, women, skulls, and faces. Many of the people he painted were in shades of gray.
Okuda became very famous around the world after he painted the inside of an old church in Llanera, Asturias, Spain, in 2015. A group of people bought the church and turned it into a skate park. They asked Okuda to paint the inside. After it opened, the church was renamed the Kaos Temple. In 2015, he also started making 3D sculptures of animal heads from fiberglass. These sculptures also had his special colorful geometric patterns. The next year, Okuda painted another abandoned church in Marrakesh, Morocco, with a huge 360-degree mural. He called this artwork "11 Mirages to Freedom."
In 2017, Graffiti Art Magazine named Okuda as one of the most recognized modern street artists. His outdoor artworks can be seen in many places, including Spain, Morocco, Miami, Paris, and cities in Canada like Edmonton, Vancouver, and Toronto. His tallest outdoor mural is a large painting on a 23-story student building in Toronto, which he finished in 2018.
In 2018, he placed a series of seven sculptures called Air Land Sea around the Boston Seaport in Boston, Massachusetts, in the United States. This is his largest group of artworks installed in one place so far.
What Makes Okuda's Art Special?
Okuda San Miguel's art is mostly known for its geometric shapes and many bright colors. His works often include religious symbols, animals, and huge heads. Art experts describe his style as pop surrealism, which means it mixes dream-like images with bright, popular art, and has a clear influence from street art.
His art often explores big ideas like the meaning of life and how modern society can sometimes feel like a "false freedom." He is interested in how we balance new ways of living with our basic human nature. He loves pop art, especially from movies and fashion. He also gets ideas from the light and colors of different cultures around the world. All these interests help him create his unique style. Sometimes, he finds inspiration in famous old artworks like The Garden of Earthly Delights by El Bosco or the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci. Some of the artists who have influenced him include René Magritte, Max Ernst, Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and Hieronymus Bosch.
