The Old Bergen Church is a very old church in Jersey City, New Jersey. It started way back in 1660. Back then, this area was a Dutch colony called New Netherland. It's the oldest church group that has kept going in New Jersey.
Today, it's part of both the Reformed Church in America and the Presbyterian Church (USA). This church is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1973. The first church building was built in 1680. The building you see today was finished in 1841.
A Long History
The church group began in 1660. It started in a Dutch village called Bergen. This village was across the Hudson River from New Amsterdam. New Amsterdam is now Lower Manhattan in New York City.
The first church services were held in a log schoolhouse. In 1680, a new church was built. It was made of sandstone and had eight sides. A builder named William Day created it. This church was on Vroom Street.
Growing Bigger
The church group grew too large for the first building. So, a second church was built in 1773. This one was also made of sandstone. It stood at the corner of Bergen Avenue and Vroom Street.
The third and current church building was finished in 1841. It was designed by William H. Kirk and Company. Clark and Van Nest also helped with the design.
People Buried Here
The Old Bergen Church has its own cemetery. The Speer Cemetery is also connected to the church.
- Jane Tuers (1745–1834) – She was a brave woman who supported the American side during the American Revolutionary War.
