The Old Greenville City Hall was an important building in Greenville, South Carolina. It was first built in 1889. This building was located at the corner of Main and Broad Streets. It started as the U.S. Courthouse and Post Office.

Later, in 1938, the building became the city hall for Greenville. It served the city for many years. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. This is a list of places important to American history. However, it was removed from the list in 1973. This happened because the building was torn down that year.

Building History

The original courthouse and post office was designed by James H. Windrim. He was a main architect for the U.S. Treasury Department. The building was constructed where Colonel David Hoke's home once stood. James R. Lawrence moved from Michigan to help build it.

Over the years, the building had some changes. In 1909, another architect named James Knox Taylor added to its north side. Smaller changes were also made in 1923, 1924, 1927, 1929, and 1931.

The building was used by different courts. The U.S. Circuit Court met there until 1898. Then, the U.S. District Court used it until 1937.

In 1938, the city of Greenville made a deal. They traded some land for the courthouse building. After a new post office was built on that land, the old building became the Greenville City Hall.

A new city hall was later built next door. The Old City Hall was torn down in 1973. A parking garage was built in its place. This garage is across Broad Street from the Peace Center.

Building Design

This two-story building was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. This style often uses strong, heavy stone and round arches. The building had a red tiled roof. It also featured special towers that looked like castles. There were also decorative terracotta pieces.

Inside, the main entrance area had pink marble floors. A staircase led up to the tower. This staircase had unique half-turns on its landings. Some people have compared the building's design to the famous Smithsonian Castle.
