John Neptune (born July 22, 1767 – died May 8, 1865) was an important leader of the Penobscot people. He was elected as the Lieutenant-Governor of the Penobscot Nation in 1816. This was a position he held for his entire life.
John Neptune lived on Indian Island near Old Town, Maine. He was known as a very powerful leader for nearly 50 years. Many people even called him "the Governor," though that wasn't his official title.

Early Life and Family
John Neptune was born into the Eel clan of the Penobscot Nation. His father, John (Orsong) Neptune, was also a strong leader. He had been the tribe's war chief.
John Neptune was also known as a m'teoulino, which means a medicine man in the Penobscot language. A medicine man is a person who uses traditional knowledge to help their community. They might help with healing or spiritual guidance.
A Leader for His People
John Neptune was a very important figure for the Penobscot people. He guided them through many changes during his long life. He helped make decisions for the tribe and worked to protect their interests.
He was a respected leader who worked to keep his people strong. He served as Lieutenant-Governor for almost half a century.
Working with the State of Maine
After Maine became a state, John Neptune played a key role. He helped map the areas around the Penobscot and St. John rivers. This mapping was very important for understanding the land.
