The Old Parish Church (also known as Muckle Kirk) is a very old and important building in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It's located on Maiden Street. This church is a special "Category A listed" building. This means it's a building of great national importance.

Local brothers, Robert and John Mitchell, built the church. They worked on it between 1804 and 1806. The design for the church came from Alexander Laing, an architect from Edinburgh. Inside the church, there is a very old bell called the Burgerhuys bell, which was made way back in 1647!

The Old Parish Church closed its doors in 2016. After it closed, the people who used to go there joined with another church in Peterhead. They merged with Trinity Church to create a new church called Peterhead New Parish Church.

Church History

Building the Church

The Old Parish Church was built over two years, from 1804 to 1806. It was designed by Alexander Laing, a well-known architect from Edinburgh. Two local brothers, Robert and John Mitchell, were the builders who made his design a reality. They created a strong and beautiful church that stood for many years.

The Old Burgerhuys Bell

One of the most interesting parts of the Old Parish Church is its bell. This bell is called the Burgerhuys bell. It is very old, dating all the way back to 1647. Imagine how many years that bell has been around! It has seen centuries of history in Peterhead.

The Church Closes

In 2016, the Old Parish Church stopped holding services. The people who went to this church decided to join another church in Peterhead. They combined with Trinity Church to form a new, bigger church. This new church is now known as Peterhead New Parish Church.
