The Old Port of Montreal (also called Vieux-Port de Montréal in French) is a famous historic area in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It's found in Old Montreal and stretches for more than 2 kilometers along the Saint Lawrence River. People started using this area way back in 1611. French fur traders used it as a busy trading post to exchange goods.

Later, in 1976, the main port activities moved to a new location, the Port of Montreal. In the early 1990s, the Old Port was completely updated. Today, it is a fun place for recreation and history. About six million visitors come here every year.

Fun Things to Do

The Old Port offers many exciting activities for both locals and visitors. You can visit the Montreal Science Centre, which has an IMAX Theatre. There is also the tall Montreal Clock Tower.

You can walk, cycle, or rollerblade along the riverfront. You can even rent quadricycles, pedal boats, or Segways for a unique ride. The Old Port is also at the start of the Lachine Canal. This canal has been improved and is now a popular spot for cycling, rollerblading, and pleasure boating.

Some cool events happen here too, like the Festival Montréal en lumière, Igloofest, and the Matsuri Japon festival. In June 2012, a special urban beach called the Plage de l'Horloge (Clock Tower Beach) opened right next to the Clock Tower.

The Old Port of Montreal changed its name to The Quays of the Old Port of Montreal in 2005. About every two years, the famous Cirque du Soleil launches a new show from the Jacques Cartier Quay. The Grande roue de Montréal Ferris Wheel opened in 2017 at the Old Port. It is the tallest Ferris wheel in Canada.

How the Old Port is Managed

The Old Port is managed by a group called the Old Port of Montreal Corporation. This group is part of the Canada Lands Company. Even though it's connected to Canada Lands, the Old Port reports directly to the government.
