What is Old Quebec Street Shoppes?

Old Quebec Street Shoppes & Office Suites has two levels. The first floor is for shopping, with many different stores. The second floor has offices and spaces for doctors or other medical services. There's also a parking garage, called the West Parkade, right next to the building for visitors.

A Look at the History of Old Quebec Street

Guelph was started by John Galt in the 1820s. Quebec Street was one of the very first streets named in the city. For a long time, Quebec Street had shops and services on both sides of Wyndham Street North.

Around 1980, the part of Quebec Street east of Wyndham Street was closed. This was to build a new shopping mall. This mall opened in 1984 and was called an Eaton Centre. Eaton's was a very famous department store in Canada.

However, the Eaton's company closed down in 1999. Because of this, the city bought the mall and renamed it the Guelph Centre. A big part of the old Eaton's store was taken down. This space was then rebuilt to become the Sleeman Centre, a sports arena. The rest of the old mall became what we now know as The Old Quebec Street Shoppes & Office Suites, which opened in 2003.

The Unique Design of the Building

The skylights over the shops in Old Quebec Street make a visitor feel as though they were outside.

Old Quebec Street Shoppes & Office Suites has a very special design. It makes you feel like you're walking down an old-fashioned main street, but indoors! The building looks like it's from a long time ago. It has a tall roof with big windows, called skylights, that let in lots of sunshine.

You'll also see exposed brick walls and pretty decorations like wrought iron window boxes. These details make the inside feel like the old limestone and brick buildings you see around downtown Guelph. The idea was to make it look like the original Quebec Street did before the first mall was built.
