Exploring the Old Sullivan County Courthouse
The Old Sullivan County Courthouse is located in the center of Newport. You can find it on a small hill, just east of Main Street. It sits behind some newer town buildings.
What Does the Courthouse Look Like?
The main part of the courthouse is a brick building. It has two and a half stories and a sloped roof with chimneys. The front of the building has five sections. The middle section has a tall entrance topped with a tower.
The main entrance is two stories tall. It has windows on the sides and a round window above the door. The tower above the entrance is made of wood. It has an open section with arched windows, like a bell tower. A small dome sits on top of the tower. There is also a two-story brick section attached to the side of the main building.
A Timeline of the Courthouse's History
The courthouse was built between 1825 and 1826. This was actually before Sullivan County was officially formed in 1827! The town of Newport helped pay for its construction. This building was key in choosing Newport as the new county's main town.
For many years, the building served as both the county court and the town hall. This lasted until 1873. After that, the building was given to the town. From 1873 until 1896, it was used as a school. Later, in 1896, a local group called the Grange leased the building.
