Olga María del Carmen Sánchez Cordero Dávila (born 16 July 1947) is an important Mexican politician and a former judge. She was the Secretary of the Interior for Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador from 2018 to 2021. She was the first woman ever to hold this very important job.
Before becoming a politician, she was a judge on the Supreme Court of Justice. This is Mexico's highest court. She served there from 1995 to 2015. Olga Sánchez Cordero is a member of the Morena political party. She has been elected to both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico.

Early Life and Education
Olga Sánchez Cordero was born in Mexico City on 16 July 1947. She studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). While at UNAM, she took part in the student protests of 1968.
She continued her legal training at other universities. These included the Autonomous University of Nuevo León and the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos. She also studied at the University College of Swansea in Wales, United Kingdom. Olga Sánchez Cordero was the first woman to become a notary public in Mexico City. A notary public is someone who can legally witness signatures on important documents.
Her Career as a Judge
After finishing law school, she worked at the UNAM Faculty of Law. She was the secretary of school affairs from 1976 to 1978. Later, from 1980 to 1984, she directed a seminar on law and society at UNAM. Before joining the highest court, she served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Justice for Mexico City from 1993 to 1995.
Serving on the Supreme Court
President Ernesto Zedillo chose her to be an Associate Justice (also called a Minister) on the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. The Senate approved her appointment on 26 January 1995. She was the ninth woman to become a judge on Mexico's Supreme Court. She left this position on 30 November 2015.
Working with President López Obrador
In December 2017, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was running for president. He announced that Olga Sánchez Cordero would be his choice for Secretary of the Interior if he won. She was also chosen by her party, Morena, to be a senator. She became a senator on 1 September 2018.
She left the Senate on 29 November 2018. The next day, 1 December 2018, she became the Secretary of the Interior. This made her the first woman to hold this important government job. She resigned from this role in 2021. Adán Augusto López took over as Secretary of the Interior.
Olga Sánchez Cordero returned to the Senate on 26 August 2021. She wanted to help President López Obrador with his plans and laws. She was then elected to be the President of the Senate. She held this position until 30 August 2022. Alejandro Armenta Mier became the next President of the Senate.
She decided not to run for president in the 2024 election. Instead, she advised Claudia Sheinbaum during her campaign for president. In the 2024 election, Olga Sánchez Cordero was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. She started this new role on 1 September 2024.
Her Ideas and Beliefs
Olga Sánchez Cordero describes herself as a feminist. This means she believes in equal rights and opportunities for women. She supports efforts to allow women to make their own important health choices across the country.
She is also described as a "social liberal" and a "European-style social democrat." This means she believes in individual freedoms and social fairness. She supports same-sex marriage in Mexico.
She has said that strict laws about certain plants have caused problems like violence and poverty. She supports changing these laws to help people. In 2024, she also spoke about a government program to help women join the workforce.
Personal Life
Olga Sánchez Cordero is married to Eduardo García Villegas. They have three children. She and her husband own an apartment in Houston, Texas, United States. In 2013, Forbes Mexico magazine named her one of the fifty most powerful women in the country.
