Olga María del Carmen Sánchez Cordero Dávila (born 16 July 1947) is an important Mexican politician and a former judge. She made history as the first woman to serve as Secretary of the Interior for Mexico. This is a very powerful job, like a chief of staff for the country. She held this position from 2018 to 2021 under President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Before her political career, she was a judge on the Supreme Court of Justice. This is Mexico's highest federal court. She served there for 20 years, from 1995 to 2015. Olga Sánchez Cordero is a member of the Morena political party. She has been elected to both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, which are parts of Mexico's Congress.

Early Life and Education

Olga Sánchez Cordero was born in Mexico City on July 16, 1947. She studied law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). While she was a student at UNAM, she took part in the student protests of 1968. These protests were a big event in Mexico's history.

She continued her legal training at other universities. These included the Autonomous University of Nuevo León and the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos. She also studied in the United Kingdom at the University College of Swansea in Swansea, Wales. Later, Sánchez Cordero became the first female notary public in Mexico City. A notary public is someone who can legally witness signatures on important documents.

Judicial Career

After finishing law school, Olga Sánchez Cordero worked at UNAM's Faculty of Law. She was the secretary of school affairs from 1976 to 1978. From 1980 to 1984, she directed a seminar on law and society at UNAM. Before joining the highest court, she served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Justice for Mexico City from 1993 to 1995.

Supreme Court of Justice

President Ernesto Zedillo chose her to be an Minister (Associate Justice) of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN). The Senate approved her nomination on January 26, 1995. Her appointment was very important because she was the ninth woman to become a judge on the SCJN. She left this important position on November 30, 2015.

Political Career and the Senate

In December 2017, Andrés Manuel López Obrador was running for president. He announced that if he won, Olga Sánchez Cordero would be his choice for Secretary of the Interior. She was also chosen by her party, Morena, to be a senator. She became a senator on September 1, 2018.

She left the Senate on November 29, 2018. The next day, on December 1, 2018, she officially became the Secretary of the Interior. This was a historic moment because she was the first woman to hold this powerful job in Mexico. In 2021, she resigned from this role. Adán Augusto López, who was the Governor of Tabasco, took her place.

Olga Sánchez Cordero returned to the Senate on August 26, 2021. She went back to help President López Obrador with his plans for new laws. She was then elected to be the President of the Senate. She held this leadership role until August 30, 2022. After that, Alejandro Armenta Mier became the new President of the Senate.

For the 2024 election, Sánchez Cordero decided not to run for president herself. Instead, she advised Claudia Sheinbaum during her campaign to become the presidential candidate for the Morena party. She also said that she did not plan to join Sheinbaum's government if Sheinbaum won the election.

In the 2024 election, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This means she will serve as a representative in the Mexican Congress from 2024 to 2027.
