Problems and Exercises in Analytic Geometry

Olga Tsuberbiller (Russian: Ольга Николаевна Цубербиллер, 19 September 1885 - 28 September 1975) was a Russian mathematician. She is famous for writing the textbook Problems and Exercises in Analytic Geometry. This book has been a standard textbook in high schools since it was first published in 1927.

Tsuberbiller was a close friend of Sophia Parnok, a well-known Russian poet. She cared for Parnok during her final illness. After Parnok's death, Tsuberbiller became responsible for her writings. Later, Tsuberbiller became partners with the famous opera singer, Concordia Antarova. In 1955, Tsuberbiller was honored as a Scientist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic.

Early Life and Education

Olga Nikolaevna Gubonina (Russian: Ольга Николаевна Губонина) was born on 7 September 1885 in Moscow. Her parents were Nadezhda Konstantinovna Artyukhova and Nikolai Petrovich Gubonin. Her mother was a farmer, and her father worked for the Chinese Eastern Railway.

Olga's grandfather, Pyotr Ionovich Gubonin [ru], was an important industrialist. She spent some of her childhood at her family's estate in Gurzuf. This resort was started by her grandfather and uncle, Sergei Gubonin. They designed many hotels and cottages there. Gurzuf became a favorite place for writers. Olga graduated from the Bestuzhev Courses in 1908.

Teaching Career

After graduating, Olga Gubonina immediately started teaching analytic geometry at the Bestuzhev Courses. At some point, she married. She became a widow during the Russian Civil War and then used the surname Tsuberbiller.

Tsuberbiller cared deeply about her students. She created a mathematics library and a reading room to help them study more. She also advised and tutored students. She worked to make math popular, especially among women. In the 1920s, she began teaching at the First Moscow State University.

Friendships and Family

In 1923, Tsuberbiller became friends with Sophia Parnok. Tsuberbiller was a protector for Parnok. Parnok even wrote poems about Tsuberbiller as a guardian angel. By 1925, Tsuberbiller was Parnok's closest friend. When Parnok's friend Lyudmila Erarskaya became very ill, Parnok turned to Tsuberbiller for support.

In 1926, Parnok moved in with Tsuberbiller. At this time, Tsuberbiller was already busy caring for her mother and her unemployed brother. In 1929, her brother died. Tsuberbiller then took on the responsibility of caring for his twin daughters.

Famous Textbook

In 1927, Tsuberbiller published her famous book, Задачи и упражнения по аналитической геометрии. This means Problems and Exercises in Analytic Geometry. The book quickly became a standard textbook in Soviet high schools.

Her book has been reprinted over 35 times in Russian. It has also been translated into Chinese, Czech, German, and Polish. It is still used today in Russian high schools and technical schools.

In 1930, Tsuberbiller became a professor at the Institute of Fine Chemical Technology. Later that year, she and Parnok moved to a larger apartment. This new home allowed them to host many colleagues.

Later Life and Recognition

Tsuberbiller continued to live with Parnok during Parnok's last illness. She was with Parnok when the poet died in August 1933. After Parnok's death, Tsuberbiller became partners with Concordia Antarova. Antarova was a famous opera singer who later became interested in Theosophy.

In 1936, Tsuberbiller was promoted to head of the Higher Mathematics department. She held this position until 1965. From 1943 to 1966, she also led the Department of Geometry at Moscow State University. In 1955, she was named an Honored Scientist. Just as she cared for Parnok, Tsuberbiller also cared for Antarova through various illnesses until Antarova's death in 1959. Tsuberbiller retired from the university in 1969.
