Olig was once a small community located in Kern County, California. It was situated about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of a town called McKittrick. Olig was quite high up, at an elevation of 1030 feet (314 meters) above sea level. Even though it's not there anymore, Olig could still be found on maps as late as 1912.
What Was Olig?
Olig was a "former settlement," which means it was once a place where people lived and worked, but it no longer exists as a populated area today. Many small settlements like Olig grew up around specific industries or resources.
Olig's Connection to Oil
Olig is especially known because it was located right inside the huge McKittrick Oil Field. An oil field is a large area where lots of oil is found underground. This oil field is very important for California's energy supply.
One of the specific areas within the McKittrick Oil Field, where oil was first found, was named after Olig. This "oil pool" was discovered way back in 1896. So, even though the settlement of Olig is gone, its name lives on in the history of oil discovery in California.
