Olin is a small place, called an unincorporated community, in Iredell County, North Carolina, in the United States. It's about 12 miles north of a bigger town called Statesville. Olin has its own post office that first opened way back in 1852. It still uses the ZIP code 28660 today.
History of Olin
The area around Olin Creek, also known as the Middle Fork of Rocky Creek, is where the first post office was set up. It was called the New Institute post office and opened on August 12, 1852.
How Olin Got Its Name
On February 14, 1856, the New Institute post office changed its name to the Olin post office. It was named after Stephen A. Olin. He was the person who started Randolph-Macon College and was its first president from 1832 to 1836.
The very first postmaster for Olin was William D. Watts, starting on February 14, 1856. When Olin Township was officially created in 1868, Olin continued to be an important community within it.
