The Story of the Olivas Adobe
Raymundo Olivas and His Land
Raymundo Olivas was a brave soldier who served at the Presidio of Santa Barbara. A presidio was like a fort or military base in old California. Because of his service, the governor, Juan Bautista Alvarado, gave him a large piece of land. This happened in 1841.
The land was about 2,250 acres, which is a huge area! Olivas named his new land Rancho San Miguel. Before this, the land was used for cattle by the nearby Mission San Buenaventura. But after the missions changed, the land became available.
Building a Home for a Big Family
Raymundo Olivas started building his adobe home in 1837. He made it bigger in 1849, adding a second story. This made it the only two-story adobe house in the area at that time.
Raymundo and his wife had a very large family. They had 21 children! Imagine living in a house with so many brothers and sisters. The Olivas family lived in this home until 1899.
From Home to Hunting Lodge
Later, the Olivas Adobe became a hunting lodge. It was owned by Max Fleischmann, who was famous for his yeast and margarine products. After Max Fleischmann passed away, his foundation gave the land and the house to the City of Ventura.
A Protected Historic Place
Today, the Olivas Adobe is a very important historical site. It is recognized as California Historical Landmark #115. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is a special place that helps us remember California's past.
