Oliver's Mount is a famous hill in Scarborough, England. It offers amazing views of the town and the sea. People visit for camping, sports, and to see a special monument for war heroes.

But Oliver's Mount is most famous for its exciting motorcycle races! The first race happened way back in 1946. Today, it still hosts motorcycle races, car rallies, and car hill-climb events. It's a truly unique place for motorsports.

In 2016, the Tour de Yorkshire bike race even had its final big climb at Oliver's Mount. The hill is also home to a broadcasting tower. This tower sends TV and radio signals to Scarborough and nearby areas.

Oliver's Mount got its name from Oliver Cromwell. People once thought he placed cannons there during the English Civil War. However, there's no proof he ever visited Scarborough. Before 1804, the hill was called Weaponness. This name now refers to the area around the hill.

Exciting Races at Oliver's Mount

The race track at Oliver's Mount is a special kind of circuit. It uses twisty public roads, making it a real challenge for riders. This type of track is called a street circuit. Oliver's Mount is the only street circuit in England!

Many years ago, up to 58,000 people would come to watch the races. The circuit is about 3.88 kilometers (2.43 miles) long. Riders need great skill and courage to tackle its turns and reach speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour (170 mph).

Throughout the year, Oliver's Mount hosts four big motorcycle racing weekends. These include the Bob Smith Spring Road Races, the Barry Sheene Classic, the Cock o' the North Road Races, and The Gold Cup. These events attract riders and fans from all over the UK. The 243 Road Racing Association organizes these thrilling races.

Oliver's Mount also holds British SuperMoto and Hill Climb events. In the past, it even hosted two Formula III car races in 1955 and 1956.

In 2018, racing at Oliver's Mount stopped because of safety worries. But a new group, led by former racers Mick Grant and Eddie Roberts, took over. With help from Scarborough Borough Council, racing returned in 2019. The Barry Sheene Classic and the Gold Cup were big successes that year. Today, a husband and wife team, Andy and Wendy Hayes, run the events. They work with experienced officials to make sure the racing calendar is full and exciting.
