Early Life and Wu-Tang Clan
Oliver Grant was born in Jamaica on November 3, 1973. He grew up in the Park Hill Projects in Staten Island, New York. There, he became childhood friends with members of the future Wu-Tang Clan. He was especially close with Divine, the older brother of RZA, a founding member of the group.
Grant played a big part in the early days of the Wu-Tang Clan. He helped the group get started by investing money in their future. During a chess game, two founding members of Wu-Tang Clan gave him the nickname "Power." They said it was because he had the strength and energy to get things done. Oliver Grant was also the older brother of Killarmy member Killa Sin, who was also connected to the Wu-Tang family.
Building the Wu Wear Brand
Oliver Grant became a successful clothing businessman in 1995. He launched Wu Wear, which was one of the first clothing lines inspired by music artists. He began by selling clothes with the group's logo through mail order.
The Success of Wu Wear
At first, clothing makers were hesitant to work with him. However, after the Wu-Tang Clan became very popular and sold millions of records, things changed. Grant opened a Wu Wear store in Staten Island. He also set up an office in Manhattan to sell clothes wholesale to other stores.
The Of Mics and Men documentary, released in 2019, showed how successful Power's business was. It led to four Wu Wear stores opening across the country. Major department stores like Macy's also carried the clothing line. During the group's most popular years, Wu Wear earned over $25 million each year. In 2008, Grant changed the brand name to "Wu-Tang Brand." He stopped the original Wu Wear line because fake versions were being sold online.
Relaunching the Brand
In 2017, Oliver Grant and RZA partnered with Live Nation Merchandise. They relaunched the classic clothing line. Power worked as the brand's "Historic Creative Consultant." This role ensured that the new items kept the original style and quality. The relaunched line included both classic designs and new products.
In a 2013 interview, Power talked about the lasting impact of the Wu-Tang brand. He believed that Wu-Tang's clothing line and other business ventures were early examples of entrepreneurship. These efforts helped future hip-hop artists explore business opportunities outside of music. He felt that these pioneers broke down barriers for the culture.
