Oliver fitz Regis or Oliver Fitzroy (died 1218/1219) was a son of John, King of England. He was born before his father became king. Oliver's mother was Hawise, who was the sister of a knight named Fulk FitzWarin.

Early Life and Family

Oliver was likely born around the year 1199. This was the same year his father, John, became King of England. His mother, Hawise, was not married to the King. This made Oliver an "illegitimate" son.

Fighting for the King

Oliver was a loyal son to his father, King John. He fought in a big conflict called the First Barons' War. This war was between King John and some powerful English nobles.

Defending Castles

In June 1216, Oliver was in charge of Wolvesey Castle. Prince Louis of France and the rebel nobles attacked the castle. Oliver defended it bravely during this attack.

A year later, in April 1217, Prince Louis tried to reach Dover Castle by sea. Oliver and another knight, William of Cassingham, attacked a small group of Louis's soldiers. This forced Prince Louis to land his ships at Sandwich instead.

Royal Gifts and Support

King John rewarded Oliver for his loyalty and service.

  • In November 1215, Oliver was given control of Tonge Castle.
  • In July 1216, he received the manor (a large estate) of Erdington.

After King John died, Oliver's half-brother, Henry III, became king. Henry's advisors confirmed Oliver's right to Tonge Castle in June 1217.

Joining the Crusades

In 1218, Oliver decided to join the Fifth Crusade. A Crusade was a religious war fought by European Christians. Oliver may have joined to fulfill a promise his late father, King John, had made.

Journey to Damietta

Oliver needed money for his journey. He managed to get funds by using a special royal right. He traveled with other English crusaders. They arrived at the siege of Damietta in Egypt. This was in either August or September of 1218.

Death and Burial

Oliver died at Damietta in late 1218 or early 1219. It is not known if he died from an illness or in battle. His body was brought back to England. He was buried in Westminster Abbey, a very important church. There are no records that Oliver ever married.
