Olong O. "Ollie" Ogbu (born May 18, 1987) is an American football coach. He used to be a professional football player. Ollie played as a defensive end and defensive tackle.
He played for teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. Before playing professionally, he was a star player at Penn State University. Today, he coaches the defensive line at Lake Erie College.
Early Life and High School Football
Ollie Ogbu grew up in Staten Island, New York. He went to St. Joseph by the Sea High School. There, his amazing speed and strength on the football field caught the eye of college coaches.
A coach from Penn State University, Brian Norwood, saw his talent. He convinced Ollie to come play football at Penn State. After high school, Ollie spent a year at Milford Academy. This is a special school that helps athletes get ready for college sports. He was named an All-American player there.
College Football Career
Ollie joined Penn State in 2006. His coach, Joe Paterno, gave him the nickname "The Staten Island Ferry." This was because he was strong and powerful, like a ferry boat.
Ollie "redshirted" his first year. This means he practiced with the team but did not play in games. This allowed him to train and get stronger. He then played in almost every game during the 2007 season. He made 18 tackles and had 10 tackles-for-loss. He also got one sack and forced a fumble.
For his great play, he was named to the Freshman All-Big Ten team. In 2010, as a senior, he was named All-Big Ten again. This showed he was one of the best players in his college conference. Ollie also played in the 86th East-West Shrine Game. This is a special game for top college players.
Ollie earned two college degrees from Penn State in 2010. He studied Crime, Law & Justice, and Sociology.
Professional Football Journey
After college, Ollie Ogbu was not chosen in the NFL draft. But the Indianapolis Colts signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2011. This means they signed him even though he wasn't drafted.
In 2012, the Colts traded Ollie to the Philadelphia Eagles. He played for the Eagles for a short time. Later that year, he joined the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played in three games for them, making 7 tackles.
Ollie also played in the Arena Football League (AFL). He played for the San Jose SaberCats in 2013. In 2014, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kiss. He also played for the Hudson Valley Fort in the Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL).
After his playing career, Ollie became a coach. He has coached at several colleges, including Wagner College and the University of New Haven. He is now the defensive line coach at Lake Erie College.
