Om Ali (also called Omali, Umm Ali, or Oumm Ali) is a super yummy and famous dessert from Egypt. Its name means "Mother of Ali." This dessert has a long history, going back to the early days of Egypt's Mamluk era. It's named after the wife of an old Egyptian ruler, called a Sultan. She was married to the last Sultan of Egypt from the Ayyubid dynasty, named As-Salih. Later, she married the first Sultan of Egypt's Mamluk era, named Izz al-Din Aybak.

Shajar al-Durr was involved in the death of Aybak. After this, she became the ruler of Egypt for a short time. However, she was later removed from power and died. After her death, Aybak's first wife, who was known as Om Ali, asked for a special dessert to be made to celebrate. This delicious dessert became very popular across the country, and everyone started calling it "Om Ali" after her.

Other Versions of Om Ali

There are also different versions of this dish found in Jordan and Iraq. These are known as "khumaiaa." Om Ali is often compared to bread and butter pudding, but Om Ali does not include eggs, which bread and butter pudding usually does.
