The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights were a professional ice hockey team. They played in the American Hockey League (AHL). The team was based in Omaha, Nebraska, United States. They played their games at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The Knights were active for two seasons, from 2005 to 2007. After the 2006–07 season, their parent team, the Calgary Flames, moved them. The team then relocated to the Quad Cities.

Team History

How the Knights Started

In 2005, the Calgary Flames hockey team decided to bring back their AHL team. This team had previously been known as the Saint John Flames. They chose Omaha, Nebraska, as the new home for their minor league players.

What "Ak-Sar-Ben" Means

The name "Ak-Sar-Ben" for the team has a special meaning. It comes from the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben. This is a well-known group in Omaha that helps the community. The team's logo even included parts of this organization's symbol. Interestingly, "Ak-Sar-Ben" is "Nebraska" spelled backward! This name was also used for the arena where the original Omaha Knights hockey team played a long time ago. The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' logo also featured flame marks, just like the main Calgary Flames team.

Why the Team Moved

After playing for two seasons, the team faced some challenges. Not as many fans came to their games as hoped. Because of this, there were talks about moving the team. These rumors were heard in both Omaha and the Quad Cities. At that time, another hockey team, the Quad City Mallards, played in the Quad Cities. On May 24, 2007, the Calgary Flames and the Quad City Mallards officially announced the move. The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights became the Quad City Flames.
