The Quad City Flames were owned by QC Sports Ventures Inc. This group was based in the Quad Cities. The team's move to Moline was officially announced on May 24, 2007. Because of this, the previous hockey team in the arena, the Quad City Mallards, stopped playing.
After the 2008–09 season, the team left the Quad Cities. They moved to Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. There, they became the Abbotsford Heat for the 2009–10 season.

Team History: From Omaha to Quad Cities
The Flames' AHL team moved from Omaha, Nebraska. They had played there for two seasons as the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. The team decided to move because they were losing money in Omaha. They had two seasons where they didn't make enough money.
The new team joined their former rival, the Rockford IceHogs, in moving up to the AHL. The Flames played their first AHL game in Moline on October 6, 2007. They won 5–1 against Rockford.
The Flames were the third team to try to bring an AHL team to the Quad Cities. Before them, the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers tried. But they couldn't agree with the owners of the Mallards and the arena. Even though the NHL team had a deal until the 2011–12 season, the Flames and Quad City Sports Ventures ended it early. They ended the agreement after only two seasons. The local owners in Quad Cities estimated the team lost about $1.3 million in 2008–09.
