One Bush Plaza, also called the Crown Zellerbach Building, is a tall office building in San Francisco, California. It's located in the city's busy Financial District, right on Bush Street and Battery Street. This 20-story building stands about 308 feet (94 meters) tall and was finished in 1959.
Building History
This building was first the main office for a company called Crown Zellerbach. They were a very large company that made paper and other products from forests. Later, in 1985, another person bought the company. Over time, parts of Crown Zellerbach were sold to other companies like James River and Georgia-Pacific. The building was also once the headquarters for a company called Hambrecht & Quist.
A New Kind of Building
One Bush Plaza was one of the first big buildings built in downtown San Francisco after the Great Depression. That was a long time, about 30 years, without many new tall buildings.
It was also one of the first buildings in San Francisco designed in the "International Style." This style of architecture is known for its simple, clean lines and lots of glass. It was built shortly after other famous International Style buildings like the Lever House and Seagram Building.
The building is special because it takes up an entire city block all by itself. It also faces Bush Street instead of the busier Market Street. This was a bit unusual when it was built. Right across from it is the Shell Building, which is another famous San Francisco skyscraper with an Art Deco design.
The famous architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill helped design this important building.
