One Manhattan West is a very tall office building in New York City. It has 67 floors and is located on the West Side of Manhattan. The building was designed by a company called Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). It was finished in 2019.
This skyscraper is part of a larger area called Manhattan West. It was the second big tower to be built there. The building looks like a rectangle and has a special outer wall made of glass. This glass wall helps keep the building warm in winter and cool in summer.
One interesting thing about One Manhattan West is that part of it hangs over train tracks. Because of this, a strong central part of the building, called the mechanical core, holds up most of its weight. Construction on the building started in April 2015. A big law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, agreed to be the main tenant. The building officially opened on October 30, 2019.

Design and Features
One Manhattan West is about 996 feet (304 meters) tall. It has 67 floors that people can use. The building is designed to be very energy efficient. It is expected to get a special award called LEED Gold for its green design. The building is located at 395 Ninth Avenue in Manhattan.
Shape and Outer Walls
The building has a rectangular shape. The north, south, and west sides go straight up from the ground. But the east side curves outwards until the 19th floor. Then it gently curves back in towards the roof.
The outer walls are made of a special glass called a curtain wall. This glass is insulated, which means it helps control the temperature inside. The designers wanted the building to look like it was made from shiny metal. Most of the walls use flat glass panels. But the curved east side uses special curved panels. All four corners of the building are rounded.
At the ground level, there is a very tall lobby, about 45 feet (14 meters) high. This lobby does not have columns around its edges. This is because the building's strong central core holds up all the weight. The lobby walls are clear glass, making it feel open and bright.
How the Building Stands Up
The main support system of the tower is a strong central core made of reinforced concrete. This core is like the backbone of the building. Its walls can be as thick as 4 feet (1.2 meters). The building also has long, diagonal steel beams, called "kickers." These beams help transfer the building's weight from the core down to its foundations.
Part of the building is built over underground train tracks that lead to Penn Station. Because of this, the building's foundations only cover a small part of the land. The very southern part of the lobby actually hangs over these train tracks. To avoid the tracks, the columns on the south, north, and east sides do not go all the way to the ground. Instead, their weight is transferred to the central core above the lobby.
The central core goes through the middle of the lobby. It is covered with beautiful stone walls made of travertine. This stone is from Italy. Near the lobby's ceiling, the core widens out. Workers used special machines to carve the stone. The area where the elevators are, inside the core, is also covered with marble. The lobby floor is made of black stone, and some walls have wood panels. The southern part of the lobby also has shops and a food hall. These areas are shared with another building nearby, 5 Manhattan West.
Building History
One Manhattan West was built as part of the larger Manhattan West project. The company Brookfield Asset Management started buying land for this project in the 1980s. The idea for the project began in the 1990s. Construction officially started in January 2013.
The original plan included two office towers (One and Two Manhattan West), a residential building (Three Manhattan West), and a hotel (Four Manhattan West). It also included updating an existing office building (Five Manhattan West). In October 2015, a company from Qatar invested a lot of money into the project.
A big law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, decided to move into One Manhattan West in April 2015. They would take up a large part of the building. Brookfield decided to start building One Manhattan West even though only a quarter of it was rented. This was partly because of competition from another big development called Hudson Yards.
The building reached its halfway point in October 2017. That's when the first glass panels were put on the outside. Soon after, other big companies like Ernst & Young, the National Hockey League, JPMorgan Chase, and Accenture also decided to move in. The building was topped out (meaning it reached its full height) in August 2018.
One Manhattan West officially opened on October 30, 2019. When it was finished, most of the building was already rented out. In 2021, Brookfield Asset Management decided to sell a part of its ownership in the building. In March 2022, another company called Blackstone bought a large share of the building.
