Opabin Lake facts for kids
Opabin Lake is a beautiful lake high up in the Yoho National Park mountains in Canada. It's located near a small town called Field, British Columbia. The lake sits at an elevation of about 2,277 metres (7,470 ft), which is really high!
You can reach Opabin Lake by hiking. There are two main trails: the East Opabin trail and the West Opabin trail. These trails create a 6 km (about 3.7 miles) loop. They both start and end at Lake O'Hara. Both trails climb about 250 metres (820 ft) (around 820 feet) to get to the lake.
The East Opabin trail winds through forests above Lake O'Hara. It follows a stream that gets its water from melting snow on the mountain peaks. The West Opabin trail is a bit tougher. It goes through mossy woods and then onto rocky paths. These paths offer amazing views of Lake O'Hara, Mary Lake, and the mountains around them. There's also another trail that connects the East Opabin trail to Lake Oesa.
Opabin Plateau: A High Mountain Home
Opabin Lake is the main feature of the Opabin Plateau. This plateau is a special kind of valley called a "hanging valley." It sits high above and to the southeast of Lake O'Hara. The plateau has many trails and streams. It also has lots of small lakes and ponds.
