What Happened During Operation Blockbuster?
Operation Blockbuster started on February 26, 1945. It was led by the First Canadian Army. They also had help from the British XXX Corps. The earlier part of the operation, Veritable, had been tough. It took longer and cost more lives than expected.
Because of this, the Canadian commander, General Harry Crerar, decided to start fresh. Three divisions of British and Canadian soldiers moved southeast. They surprised German positions in a forested area called the Uedemer Hochwald.
After securing the Hochwald, the Allied forces continued their advance. Their next target was the town of Xanten. The fighting was intense, but the Allies kept moving forward.
Linking Up with US Forces
The operation ended on March 3, 1945. On this day, the Canadian and British troops made an important connection. They met up with the Ninth US Army. This meeting happened near a place called Berendonk, close to Geldern.
This link-up was a big success for the Allies. It meant they had secured a large area of the Lower Rhine region. Operation Blockbuster helped clear the way for the final push into Germany. It showed the strong teamwork between the Allied forces.
Battle Honours for Canadian Regiments
During Operation Blockbuster, some Canadian infantry and armoured regiments fought bravely. Their actions were recognized with special awards called "battle honours." These honours are displayed on their regimental flags. The honour given for fighting in this area was called The Hochwald.
Some of the regiments that earned this honour include:
- The Algonquin Regiment
- The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada
- The Lake Superior Regiment (Motor)
- The Lincoln and Welland Regiment
- Sherbrooke Fusiliers Regiment
- South Alberta Regiment
- The South Saskatchewan Regiment
