Operation Have Horn was a special project carried out by the United States Air Force in 1969. It involved launching special small rockets called sounding rockets. The project took place at the North Truro Air Force Station in North Truro, Massachusetts. Once the operation was finished in 1970, the equipment and used rockets were sent back to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
What Was Operation Have Horn?
Operation Have Horn was a project by the Air Force Missile Development Center at Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. This center's Missile and Drone Division helped plan and carry out the mission. The main goal was to test new sensors for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Why North Truro?
The Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories were also involved in this project. Because of their involvement, it was decided that launching the rockets from North Truro would be easier. So, a special launcher for sounding rockets and other needed equipment were set up at the North Truro Air Force Station.
When Did It Happen?
A series of Nike-Hydac rockets were launched from December 1969 to early 1970. After the tests were complete, all the equipment was flown back to Holloman Air Force Base.
