Operation Light facts for kids
Operation Light was a British naval mission during World War II. Rear Admiral Clement Moody led this operation. The main goal was for British planes to attack Japanese positions in Sigli, a place in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. They also planned to fly over the Nicobar Islands to gather information.
This mission took place from September 16 to 23, 1944. It was planned to happen at the same time as other big Allied landings. These included the landing at Morotai (called Operation Tradewind) and the landing at Peleliu by the U.S. 1st Marine Division.
What Happened During Operation Light?
This operation involved several important ships. The main ships were the aircraft carriers HMS Victorious and HMS Indomitable. These carriers carried Vought F4U Corsair planes.
A battleship, HMS Howe, helped protect the carriers. Cruisers like Cumberland and several destroyers also joined the fleet. These destroyers included Racehorse, Raider, Rapid, Redoubt, Relentless, Rocket, and Rotherham.
Challenges During the Mission
The raid faced a few problems.
- Carrier Issues: First, the aircraft carriers had some technical difficulties. The Victorious could only launch 22 planes. The Indomitable took a very long time, about 40 minutes, to launch just 18 planes.
- Lack of Information: Second, the pilots from the Fleet Air Arm didn't have enough information about their targets. This was because there weren't enough very long-range reconnaissance planes. These planes would normally fly ahead to scout the areas in India and Ceylon.
- Random Targeting: One report about the raid mentioned something unusual. After the attack, the fighter planes flew around looking for the biggest buildings. They would then shoot at these buildings with machine guns. They hoped that Japanese leaders might be inside.
