Operation Uphold Democracy was a special mission that took place in Haiti. It was led by the United States, with support from Argentina and Poland. This operation happened from September 19, 1994, to March 31, 1995.
The main goal of Operation Uphold Democracy was to bring back Haiti's elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. In 1991, the Haitian army had taken control of the country. They removed President Aristide from power in what is called a coup. This meant the army took over the government by force.
The United Nations supported this mission. They passed a special rule, Security Council Resolution 940, on July 31, 1994. This rule allowed the operation to happen and helped protect it.
Operation Uphold Democracy was successful. It helped President Aristide return to lead the Haitian government.
