Exploring Orange Creek

Orange Creek is part of the larger Ocklawaha River system. It starts at the southern end of Orange Lake. This is in southeastern Alachua County, Florida.

The creek flows generally towards the east. It travels for about 20 mi (32 km) (32 kilometers). As it flows, it creates a natural border between Marion and Putnam Counties. Finally, it empties into the Ocklawaha River near Orange Springs.

The water from Orange Creek joins the Ocklawaha River near Orange Ferry. This part of the Ocklawaha River is held back by a dam. This dam forms Rodman Reservoir. This reservoir was once part of a big project called the Cross Florida Barge Canal, which was never finished. Orange Creek was an important source of water for this reservoir.

Fun on the Water

Orange Creek is a great place for outdoor activities. You can explore the entire length of the creek by canoe. It is also well-known for fishing. Many people come here to catch fish like bass and other popular gamefish.

Other Streams Joining Orange Creek

Orange Creek has smaller streams that flow into it. One of these is called Little Orange Creek. It joins Orange Creek from the north, a few miles before Orange Creek reaches the Ocklawaha River. A long time ago, in the late 1800s, several mills were built along Little Orange Creek.
