Oraville is a small place in St. Mary's County, Maryland, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
Oraville is found where two main roads meet: Maryland Route 6 and Maryland Route 235. It is about 6.3 miles (10.1 km) southeast of another community called Charlotte Hall.
How Oraville Got Its Name
The name Oraville has an interesting story! People believe it was named after a girl called Ora Hopkins.
Early 1900s Business
Ora's stepfather, Nicholas S. Hopkins, had a business in the early 1900s. He ran a millinery store, which is a shop that sells hats. This store also served as the local post office.
The store was located at the corner of Morganza Turner Road and Route 235. The building where the store and post office once stood is still there today, but it is now in ruins.
