Orchard is a small village located in Antelope County, Nebraska, in the United States. In 2020, about 363 people lived there. It's a quiet place with a friendly community.

History of Orchard

Orchard started in 1880. It was founded when the railroad tracks reached this area. The village got its name because there were many apple orchards nearby.

Fun Things to Do in Orchard

Orchard has some great places for fun and sports! Just a short walk north of Orchard Public School, you can find many recreational facilities. These include two baseball fields, a town swimming pool, a playground, a tennis court, and a batting cage.

Schools in Orchard

Orchard's school district joined with others in 2020 to form Summerland Public Schools.

Before that, Orchard was part of Nebraska Unified School District 1. Around 2007, the villages of Clearwater, Orchard, Royal, and Verdigre started sharing school administration. Later, in 2009, the Orchard Orioles and Clearwater Cardinals football teams combined. They became known as the O-C Cyclones. This team-up was so successful that all sports teams from both schools joined under the O-C Cyclones name. Eventually, the school systems fully combined to create Clearwater-Orchard Public Schools.

The village also has the Orchard Public Library, where you can find books and learn new things.

Geography and Climate

Orchard covers about 0.45 square miles (1.02 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village.

Orchard has a type of weather called a humid continental climate. This means the village experiences big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are usually warm to hot, and can sometimes be humid. Winters are cold, and can even be very cold.

Population of Orchard

In 2010, Orchard had 379 people living there. There were 176 households, and 111 of those were families. The village had about 842 people per square mile.

Most of the people living in Orchard in 2010 were White (98.2%). A small number were from other backgrounds. About 2.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

The average age of people in Orchard was 48.3 years old. About 20.3% of residents were under 18. About 24.8% were 65 years old or older. The population was almost evenly split between males (50.7%) and females (49.3%).

Local Media

The main local news source for Orchard is the Antelope County News/Orchard News. This newspaper is now based in Neligh, Nebraska. However, it is still the official newspaper for the Orchard community. Carrie Pitzer, who grew up in Orchard, owns the publication.

While Orchard does not have its own television or radio stations, a Christian radio station called KGRD is licensed in Orchard. This station broadcasts from O'Neill, Nebraska.
