Parabolic trajectory
The path of a ball shot from a cannon is an example of something an ODE can describe.

An ordinary differential equation (often called an ODE) is a special kind of math equation. It helps us understand how things change. Imagine you want to describe how a ball flies through the air, or how a population of animals grows over time. ODEs are perfect for this!

These equations show the relationship between a changing quantity and how fast it changes. The word ordinary means that the change depends on just one thing. For example, the ball's height changes only with time. This is different from other equations that might depend on many things, like time and location. Scientists use ODEs a lot to create models and make predictions in many areas of science.

Finding Solutions for ODEs

For a long time, mathematicians and scientists have tried to find ways to solve these equations. Sometimes, you can find an exact formula that tells you everything about the change. But often, it's very hard or even impossible to find such a perfect formula for every type of ODE.

Using Computers to Solve ODEs

Because finding exact solutions can be so tricky, people started looking for other ways. With the invention of computers, a new field called "numerical methods" became very important. These methods don't give you an exact formula. Instead, they use computers to find very close approximations of the solution. It's like finding a very good estimate rather than the perfect answer. This is super helpful for complex problems in physics, engineering, and other sciences.
