The Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a special outdoor place in Portland, Oregon. It covers about 8 acres (3.2 square kilometers) in Washington Park. This memorial honors people from Oregon who served as soldiers in the Vietnam War.
The memorial was officially opened in 1987. Its idea came from five veterans and the parents of a Marine who died in Vietnam. They visited the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1982 and wanted a similar place in Oregon. A design company from Portland, Walker Macy, created the memorial. Most of the building work and materials were donated by volunteers. Even the special letters, or font, used on the memorial were designed just for it by Janis Price. It's called Hoyt, named after the nearby arboretum.
Finding the Memorial
The Oregon Vietnam Veterans Memorial is located inside the Hoyt Arboretum. It's very close to other cool places like the World Forestry Center and the Oregon Zoo.
