Oreophrynella are a special group of toads, often called bush toads. They are part of the true toad family, Bufonidae. These small toads live in specific parts of South America, including southern Venezuela, Guyana, and the very northern areas of Brazil. They are known for their unique ways of living in their mountain homes.

What are Bush Toads?

Oreophrynella toads are small amphibians. They are called "bush toads" because they often live in bushy or rocky areas, especially in the mountains. They are quite rare and are usually found in high places like the flat-topped mountains called tepuis in Venezuela.

Where Do They Live?

These toads are found in the Guiana Highlands, a very old part of the world. This area has unique mountains and forests. The toads live in places that are often wet and misty, which is perfect for amphibians. They need this damp environment to keep their skin moist.

How Many Types of Bush Toads Are There?

Scientists have discovered 8 different kinds, or species, of Oreophrynella toads. Each species has a special scientific name, like Oreophrynella quelchii. Some of them also have common names that describe them, such as the "Pebble Toad" (Oreophrynella nigra) or the "Roraima Bush Toad" (Oreophrynella quelchii).

Here are the known species:

  • Oreophrynella cryptica
  • Oreophrynella dendronastes
  • Oreophrynella huberi (also known as the Bolivar Bush Toad)
  • Oreophrynella macconnelli (also known as MacConnell's Bush Toad)
  • Oreophrynella nigra (also known as the Pebble Toad)
  • Oreophrynella quelchii (also known as the Roraima Bush Toad)
  • Oreophrynella vasquezi
  • Oreophrynella weiassipuensis
